My 5 Weeks Postpartum Journey
It truly takes a village, and this month has truly shown me that. A little over a month ago, my son Luca, was born. He isn’t my first child, he’s actually my third. But, boy, was this time a complete surprise. We had a plan, we have my family nearby (literally a few streets over), but things didn't go so smoothly. The week of my son’s birth, almost my entire family got sick. I went into labor by myself, but thankfully my mother-in-law came to watch the girls, so my husband was actually able to be there for the birth. She stayed a few days to help out, but the real battle began when she flew back and we were left alone. We were losing sleep trying to adjust to having two toddlers AND a newborn. Trying to meet their demands, make their milestones, keep up with work, spend quality time with each other , and get enough sleep was becoming impossible. After the first two weeks of drowning under all that, we finally asked my mother-in-law coming back and stay for a month. Finally, things were starting to fall into place. The girls started helping me with diaper changes, my husband started watching them so I could focus on our son, and it was so much easier than having to care for the entire family at once. We had help establishing a routine and now I see the light at the end of the tunnel because it truly does take a village even if that village is made with small hands. It’s never easy trying to take the world on by yourself, so you have to make sure you don’t. Ask for help when you need it and wait for the things to unfold instead of trying to see it yourself. It’s much easier that way and you don’t need the extra weight on your shoulders. If someone had given me any advice, it would be to delegate as much as you can because you need to share the responsibility with someone to take care of you and your mental health. Never compromise on that if you don't have to.
