MOLLY WEEDN
NEW MOM, NO CLUE
I'm so thankful for having stumbled upon ByHeart last year. I had my son in October and had planned to breastfeed, but we got off to a rocky start with a bad latch that really tore me up. After several lactation consultants, two breast trauma physicians, thrush, an allergic reaction to APNO and a million other bumps in the road, I switched to exclusively pumping because my son has an arched mouth and the latch was never going to be great. Unfortunately, my nipples just never really recovered and I'm sure the constant pumping didn't help - despite trying every flange, cushion and insert known to man - so we started to supplement when he was about three months old. I hesitated to wean though, because my son had reflux fueled by a lactose intolerance and we were supplementing with a hypoallergenic formula that I hated. It smelled awful, the ingredients were gross and it made me feel so guilty. So, I kept pumping in order to only have to supplement a few ounces a day. Thankfully, when ByHeart started shipping, we decided to try it in hopes that our son had outgrown his lactose issue or that ByHeart would be better on his tummy. We were beyond thrilled to see him take to it so well. ByHeart finally allowed me to finish weaning, knowing that my babe was getting good ingredients that made me feel less guilty about ending our breastfeeding journey, which is already so fraught with societal expectations. My hope for new moms in the future is that baby education classes give us the important info we need to choose the right formula. To talk about protein sources and carbohydrates and how to sift through all of the options. It's hard to say "fed is best" when the health care system makes those of us supplementing feel like we're executing "plan b." With the power of knowledge that formulas like ByHeart exist, we can start out on a better foot forward!
